I have severe insomnia can I take both Melatonin and Valerian Root together?
Question:
Answers:
I think that these two would be fine together as they're both natural and mild. I also think the one who wrote "sleep more" needs a STUPID SLAP! There's a reason it's called INSOMNIA dumb@%$! Jeez!
if you want to see anacondas nesting under your bed
sleep more
I take Valerian for anxiety all the time and I also have allergies, hence I found the killer combo: Valerian and cheap allergy medicine (often drowsy). It knocked me out cold.
Valerian is not a drug so I don't think it can be bad to mix but I'm not sure.
I've slept peacefully after some herbal sleepteas which had chamomile, valerian, and skullcap. A friend of mine has given me skullcap tincture for pain that has "knocked me out".
Honey, find a different doctor. NOW. Stop trying to self medicate. That's dangerous. My best friend is an insomniac since birth. She does not have the ability to sleep at 47. She didn't sleep as a baby, toddler, child, teenager or adult. She FINALLY found a doc that understands that and prescribes Ambien for her. Don't play around with insomnia. Your brain needs sleep. Without sleep, you can do things that endanger yourself and others around you. Get yourself to a doctor who doesn't think that you just want drugs for kicks.
Yes, there are even supplements sold which already combine these in the same capsule.
I don't know if I would mix these, and I have never been able to take either one, they gave me very bad nightmares seperately. Remember Valerian Root is what we get Valium from, so to the one who said herbal medicine won't cause interactions, wrong. There is always the potential so seek the care and advice from a trained naturopath, homeopath or herbalist for help in this area.
Finding what the true root of your problem is is the most important first step.
*Do you drink alcohol, caffeine, black tea, green tea or the like before bed?
*Or even a few hours before bed?
*If you're female, are you approaching menopause? Hormone swings can cause things to go haywire, so keep a journal of your cycles and symptoms to review with your medical provider, hopefully an herbalist or homeopath.
*Do you work out too close to bedtime? Exercising in the morning or midday is ideal to give your body the chance to get off the natural endorphine high before nighty night.
*Are you a night shift employee or do you consistantly go to bed at say 10pm each night. Work hours can play havoc with your natural sleep patterns, so if at all possible change to a day shift if you think this may be the case.
*Using sleep aids for an extended period of time can cause an alterred natural sleep pattern, kind of like what happens when you use laxatives too much. Beware of this, and no, Ambien is not a safe drug to take. Studies have shown people to sleepwalk at alarming rates when taking this drug. To the point where they have woken up in their car on the freeway!
My husband is on call 24/7 working for the railroad and we know how hard of a life this is (night shift work). We also know it'll (sleep problems) get worse as he gets older, so we hope to retire 10 years early...
My mother has been a cardiac and intensive care night nurse for 38 years. She has taken Ambien but managed to wean herself off in time to not have any lasting effects from this dangerous drug.
Do your homework and keep searching.
*Tryptophan is a good alternative, either in supplement form or better yet have a turkey rollup with a glass of hot milk with pure vanilla and nutmeg an hour before bed.
*Unwind, don't let your mind race. Keep a pad of paper and a pen next to the bed to jot things down when you think of something that could keep you awake. The morning will bring you a clear well rested mind to deal with things.
* Sounds funny, but orgasm can be very relaxing afterwards.
*Try listening to your body. Don't fight it. If it says "It's 2 am. and I want to get up." Do it. Maybe you'll find after an hour or two you'll fall back alseep till 7 or so.
I hope I've helped a little, good luck to you and God bless!
Yes, you can use those two together. I've seen a product that has those two plus other herbs.
I use 1 gm melatonin and 650 inositol. Of course, it's all an individual thing...finding what works for you.
Good luck and be well.

Melatonin and valerian root are safe together. Personally, valerian root has never been effective for me, but melatonin has been. Vitamin B6, calcium, copper, and magnesium are also supposed to be natural sleep aids.
There are also several over the counter drugs that work quite well, and are stronger than the natural cures. Diphenhydramine is the sleep-inducing ingredient in Tylenol® PM™ and Benadryl®. I think it's a bit too much, often leaving me groggy in the morning even if I get a full eight hours of sleep.
Exercising 4 or more hours before going to bed can also be helpful.
If you do not want to take synthetic drugs for sleep and your doctor will not help you, you may want to seek out a naturopathic physician. However, if insomnia is really having an impact on your life, drugs might be the best answer. There are also a lot of prescription drugs for sleep, like Ambien®, Lunesta®, Seroquel®, and Trazadone®.
Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/... for more info
